"Antro-- something. It's about humans and cultures and stuff. He told me like 100 times. He has a book. Dr Castiel Novak, that's his name. Google it. It's something about religion or whatever. I've never read it but he did give me a copy." It was all nice and wrapped up, he kept it under his coffee table. Maybe one day he'd look at it but he wasn't really a reader and he couldn't pretend to be.
"He told me that... Stanford is like a really good school. Especially for law." Matty told Sam tentatively, just to show him that he wasn't totally against this. "So... good job, man."
"Thanks. It's ranked as the best law school in the US. We're above Yale." Sam hadn't really meant to brag, but this was the closest he had ever gotten to Matty showing that level of interest and it just somehow came out. Maybe because he was so thrown by all the information he'd just received.
Dr Castiel Novak. Damn. "You know someone who's got a PhD in Anthropology and actually teaches it. That's impressive, you know? Even got a book published... I'm so gonna look it up."
He was already typing into his phone. Then he stared, paused, zoomed in, stared again. "Er. Did he hire a model for the book promo?"
Matty leaned over, one eye on the road and the other on the google search. "Nah, that's Cas. He doesn't smile much." Matty snorted in amusement and took a left back onto the road towards Bobby's. "He has some publishing credits. He has his book and then some textbooks he worked on. He used to teach at a super fancy college but he moved here for family or something."
Around the time his car broke down. It was like fate, he supposed.
"It's not impressive, it's just Cas. He does that sort of stuff. That's why I'm showing him real shit, you know? Movies, TV, music - I took him to a nightclub last week." That had been an experience. "He danced with a girl." Cause Matty basically forced him to.
"I mean, he's pretty young to be a-- Wow." Sam clicked on his profile and saw his academic career and, yeah, no. That was impressive. He wondered whether Matty realised just how smart this guy was. Had to be to have accomplished all that. Plus, yeah, he was a good-looking guy. Which was just not what was generally expected from someone like that. Talk about God giving with both hands.
"Good on you for showing him around. Just go easy, don't want to overwhelm him. Or set him up with the wrong kinda girl to go home with." He could imagine that could potentially be awkward. "Now I really can't wait to meet him. And show his picture to Harry, he's gonna agree with me. Your friend's kinda hot, Matty."
"I'm not gonna do him dirty, he's my friend. I wait for him and I always get him home." He never ditched Cas once, even if he had to awkwardly stand around waiting for him. He just wanted Cas to experience all he could and live somewhat normally. As he drove towards the scrapyard out front of Bobby's house, Matty pulled a face and looked at Sam once he slowed down.
"Dude. Knock it off. Leave Cas alone. He's confused enough without you doing... all that shit." He didn't want Sam all over his friend. "Just give him space, don't be weird."
"I'm not gonna hit on him. I'm in a happily exclusive relationship. I'm just saying, you ought to know. White boy with looks like that and a hairline that good, I bet girls are all over him." Just stood to reason. Sam waited for the car to be parked and then he looked at Matty from the side, trying to figure out how to best word this.
"Thanks." He swallowed. "For helping me with the tree. And all."
