Raphael's hand raised and he grabbed onto Castiel's hand, gripping it hard. And then he spoke. In Enochian. "Brother, do not violate me."
"What the -- what did he say?" Matteo was closing in, worried about Castiel and ready to try and pry that overpowered archangel off his boy if he had to. "Woah, easy there, holy one. Don't break anything."
Raphael's eyes flickered to Matteo in disgust. "Elder brothers are full of pride and arrogance. I will not be told what to do by lesser beings." Turning away, he looked back at Castiel, still gripping his wrist. "Yield to me, brother."
Castiel clenched his teeth against the pain, not wanting to show just how much it hurt in front of Matteo. He stared at Raphael, trying to make sense of what was happening. "You are not that kind of brother. You never were."
At least he was speaking. Enochian, but still. Speaking. "Stay back, Matty." He was worried he'd get hurt as well. "I won't do anything against your will."
Frankly, he doubted he could. "Samuel is worried for you. Speak to him." Maybe that appeal could help, before his wrist snapped entirely.
"Hey, Raphael!" Sam's voice was louder now, but still gentle. Trying to talk him down. "Let go of Cas, yeah? He doesn't mean any harm. He is safe."
Not that kind of brother. Raphael's eyes briefly glowed and then softened immediately. It was true, he was not that brother. He did not hurt his brothers. He wasn't like the ones he couldn't even bring himself to think about. He loosened his hold on Castiel and then finally, he let go of him. "I speak the way I know to speak."
It was like all human words had tumbled from his head. When he thought of them, he thought of tainted, ugly words falling from the mouth of demons. The human speak was tainted. Enochian was safer.
Matteo came closer to Castiel and pulled him a safe distance from Raphael. "Are you alright?" Fuck, that wrist mark looked purple.
"I'm here." Sam wrapped his arms around Raphael on instinct, simply because Raphael looked so lost right now. He held him close while looking at Castiel and his brother with wide eyes. What the fuck was he even supposed to do here?
Castiel pulled his wrist against himself, giving Matteo a reassuring smile. "I am fine." It was painful and he had no idea how easily it could be healed, having been inflicted by an archangel, but that didn't matter so much. "He says he can only speak Enochian."
"Ah, damn it. Here I've just lost my Enochian streak on Duolingo." Obviously humans could not learn Enochian, so Sam was joking. Castiel still looked at him in confusion.
"So we can't talk to him and he's a pissy little bitch to anyone but Sam. Great." Just when Matt felt they had some luck, this had to happen. He sighed and then squared up to Raphael, despite how the other was basically slumped against Sam. "Look, I get it. You got trauma - we all got trauma - but your asshole brother is causing us trouble. He has one goal and that's to get to Sam. Do you understand?"
Raphael understood Sam. Trouble. And asshole brother. And that was about enough to wrap his arms around Sam protectively. "Sam." His Sam. "No one will hurt you"
"He is saying that no one will hurt you. It's a singular you. You don't have that in English." Castiel tried to explain, but his wrist was throbbing and translating Enochian was never an easy task. "He is saying that no one will hurt Sam. He wants to protect him."
"I mean, thanks?" Sam wasn't certain what to make of that. "Might at least be good in case Lucifer tries going after his vessel." Having an archangel by his side would be useful for that. He turned his head to try and look at Raphael. "Lucifer told us to save you. He sent us. Can you tell him, Cas?"
"Lucifer told us to save you." Castiel wasn't sure they should tell Raphael that. Worth a try, he supposed.
Raphael frowned at Castiel, trying to process those words. Lucifer sent people to save him? He was his brother. He stabbed him before, belittled and mocked him, how did he know how to trust him? How could he like someone who tormented Sam keep getting away with it. "I will do what Michael could not if he touches Sam."
His eyes flashed white with an almost warning before he turned to Sam and pulled back from the hold, looking up at him. Lucifer could not be in Sam. It made no sense. He wasn't Lucifer, he was Samuel.
"Yeah, your brother told us you were with Lazar. He got us to do the leg work. Any idea why he'd look for you. Can you -- sorry, Cas, we need a translator."
"It's not me!" Sam wasn't sure why Raphael flashed his eyes at him like that, but he backed away instinctively, until he stood by Matty's side. Sometimes being by his big brother was the only way to truly feel safe. "I'm not Lucifer!"
Castiel tried to switch his brain to Enochian faster, wanting to handle this delicate situation. "Lucifer is still in his last vessel. Not Samuel. He said he is not after Samuel right now."
Which was likely a lie. It was Lucifer, after all. "He told us where to find you. He said it would get too much attention if he saved you himself."
There was a slow unfurling of Raphael, the archangel seemed to almost slump a little as his posture relaxed and his wings disappeared from view. He looked at Sam, who was clearly afraid, and felt a twist in his guy. He was never like this. He wasn't that sort of brother. "Sorry."
A new word for the vocabulary. He looked at Sam and then dropped to his knees suddenly, looking upward at the two brothers.
"Fuck." Matty kept his hand on Sam, watching Raphael curiously. "That Lazar guy really smoked your brain, huh? It's too bad you won't let Cas look."
Raphael turned to his brother, Castiel, and then looked at his wrist. "Sorry."
"You don't have to be sorry," Sam tried to reassure him, aware by now that it was unlikely to be understood. He looked at Castiel for help, who tried his best. Enochian simply didn't translate one to one to English very well.
"It is nothing, brother." He meant the wrist, obviously. "Samuel says it is nothing too. No one is angry. You can let go." Of his own anger.
"Raphael?" Sam didn't step closer yet, but he tried to get a response. "Do you want candy?"
There was something about that word that actually made him shiver. His eyes widened and he nodded his head, his mouth filling with hot saliva.
"Woah, that was something else." Matty muttered as he came over to Castiel and looked at his wrist, wincing. "You think you can heal this or should we try to talk our psycho archangel into curing you?" He was just standing there, holding Castiel's arm, gently touching his skin around the bruise. He didn't think twice about it, of course he was concerned. It was his angel.
"I should be able to heal it. Eventually." Castiel glanced Raphael's way, shaking his head. "He might smite me." It was a joke, based on real events. He smiled as he looked at Matty, saying the line Matty usually used on him. "Don't worry. It looks worse than it is."
Sam decided to ignore the romantic scene playing out in the other corner, instead walking over into the kitchen and opening the snack drawer. He got out some of the candy bars they had stored there holding the first one out to Raphael and dropping the others onto the table. "Here. Reese's. I think you like that, I've seen you eat it before."
Raphael eager took the candy and opened it swiftly, unwrapping his peanut butter cup and eating it excitedly. Then he smiled at Sam, an actual smile, his first proper smile since he got here. He ate the second one just as swiftly and dropped the litter on the floor.
"Sam!" He grinned, wide and bright, looking at the other like he had just completed a heroic task for him.
"So... we just tame him with candy and get him to keep Lucifer from killing us. Is that the plan? Cause it don't seem half bad." Matty admitted as he let go of Castiel, making some distance because he had been touching a dude's arm for way too long and it was a bit weird.
"We need to find out what Lucifer is doing." Sam knew that it boiled down to that, yet he didn't even like to think about Lucifer. He just felt it gave him an invitation to his mind when he allowed his thoughts to linger on him. "Apparently he's in charge of Hell, walking around in a vessel. Why haven't we heard more yet?"
"I do not know. Heaven is not exactly... united. Currently." Castiel shrugged. Angel Radio wasn't helping with this at all. "But I don't think him being in charge of Hell is good for us. Or anyone."
"I guess if I have to choose, I'd pick Aleister over him." He handed Raphael another candy bar, then sighed and pushed his hair back. "Saving Raphael was important. But we won't just keep waiting around for Lucifer to send us tasks."
Lucifer. Raphael closed his eyes and tuned through the angel radio to reach out to his brothers. Interesting, he found three signals. One was so weak, he couldn't get a hold of it - Michael. One was heavy and full of chatter - wherever he had fled to, that had to be Gabriel. And finally, he heard it. The anger, the arrogance, the drive. Lucifer.
He hmmed lightly as he closed his eyes, candy still in hand. Lucifer was in hell. He was brainstorming. He was trying to shut out the angel radio but he wasn't strong enough.
Raphael giggled as he realised that he was the most powerful of his brothers right now.
The little noise made Matteo pause his rant about how Aleister was a dick but he was their dick and the better option, just stare at Raphael. "Something funny there, pal."
"You are very strong, big brother." And Castiel was showing both his cunning and his survival instinct by calling him big brother under these circumstances. He looked at him, realising what he was doing. "Are you reaching out to Lucifer?"
It wouldn't be possible for Castiel to do that, not without permission. A different tier of angel. But Raphael was an archangel himself. Looking at Matteo, Castiel explained. "I think he can feel Lucifer. Archangel Radio."
"Ah, he gets more channels. That explains so much." Like Raphael's tendency to channel hop, for one thing. Sam looked at Raphael. "What's so funny?"
"Yes. He's aimless. Unsure. He has a small baby dog." There was no nice, none-clunky way to say puppy in Enochian. He kept his eyes closed as he breached Lucifer's mind for the first time in his life. He hijacked the radio and pushed gently passed that barrier. He didn't do anything, he just did it because he could. He withdrew and smiled dopily to himself.
He opened his eyes, disconnecting as he tilted up at Sam. He laughed again. What's so funny? He understood that one.
"Me." Raphael, the weak, loser brother. The bitch of Lazar. The runaway. The coward. And here he was - and he was powerful. "They're all hiding. I'm not." Raphael looked at Sam. Yes, full sentences but there was something weird going on, it was like his whole world flipped. He was reaching out, not running.
"I mean, you're strong as fuck right now, just look at you. Why would you be hiding?" Although, Sam supposed that had never stopped Raphael from hiding before. Seemed like a very belated power trip for someone who had possesses this much power since the dawn of time.
"He told me that Lucifer is aimless." Was that good or did that make him more dangerous? Harder to predict.
"It's good to talk to you, Raphael," Sam told Raphael and he meant it, "Maybe we can watch something tonight."
Raphael giggled to himself and finished his peanut butter cup. Then he held onto Sam and yanked, dragged and pulled him until he had to sit on the floor with him. He leaned against Sam and ate his final peanut butter cup. He still wasn't all there, there was something off about how he was but at least he was more happy than afraid.
"We have the strongest archangel in the room with us and we have Lucifer building up strength in hell. If he gets enough souls, we're all screwed. I think we go on the offence. Bring the fight to him." Why sit around waiting for it to get worse when they had a ringer and more power and knowledge than ever before.
"Look at him, Matty! He's barely there." Sam didn't think that was a good plan. He felt it barely even qualified as a plan. "And Lucifer has Gadreel, who's not exactly a weakling either."
"Sam is right. Gadreel is no match for an archangel, but Raphael is... Whatever he is." Castiel wasn't sure how to describe it. "But I see your point, Matty. We need to do something while we have any kind of advantage."
Sam sat on the floor with Raphael draped over him, one arm around him and unsure what was happening. "Raphie, man. We really need you." He sighed, but smiled. "He's kind of cute like this."
"Dude, he's an archangel." Matty didn't think it was so bad. Stupid, weird people could win fights and that was all this was. They were trying to win a fight against the ultimate big bad. Did it really matter if Raphael was all there or not. "Don't call him cute."
Raphael glared at Matteo in a way that made the elder brother swiftly back up with his hands held high. Then he nuzzled into Sam and enjoyed the closeness he was currently sharing. He was protecting Sam from the bad things, from Lazar and Lucifer. He had no intention of leaving his side.
