"I'm sure I can get you an in with Mary Anne, she's the lady who runs it. Raphael seems like a sweet boy, bet she'd love to take him." She was sweet, a great mom, Bobby appreciated her a lot. Really helped with Sam until that kid finally started school.
Bobby took the cup and sipped some coffee, then watched Michael. Huh. All right. "So y'all ain't really much with the handiness, you and your brother, are ya?" Seemed kind of obvious. "I could lend you a hand if ya need it."
"He's alright, sweet enough. People like him. If you can get me an in, I'd love you for it." Michael moved from behind the kitchen island and looked around the house with a small sigh. "I can't ask you to keep helping me. I would be selfish. You're a busy man and it's not so bad here."
He couldn't ask because that was rude after he fixed his car but he could exploit and manipulate. "Me and Lucifer are learning how to do it. We're just trying to patch up the leak before the storm comes in. It's over Raphael's bed so ... it would be concerning." If only he had a big, strong, handsome worker to assist him.
"Show me the leak, yeah? And stop that nonsense. If you don't want me doin' a thing, you tell me straight. If I don't wanna be doin' a thing, I'll soon let you know too. Told ya, I don't like people." Bobby put his hat back on and took a sip of coffee, then set the mug down.
Ready to be shown the leak. "You got a problem with the roof? I got some roofin' tiles lying around, wouldn't be too much effort to fix that back up."
"Problems with the roof and most of the upper floor, I'll be honest. When we came, me and Lucifer redid the flooring as best we could but I'm starting to think we didn't do a good job." They mostly did the cosmetic end of things so it looked okay up there, it was just weird and sometimes the boards came up. Michael led Bobby up the creaky stairs and to the hallway. "Most of the roof issue start about here and go on to Raphael's room."
He made light steps through the hall and led Bobby to Raphael's room. It wasn't much of a kids room, most of Raphael's toys had been lost in the shuffle and rehoming so it was mostly a small scattering and a normal people with unexciting sheets. Probably for the best, Raphael was easily stimulated.
"See that brown stain? That's where the leak is from."
"Yeah, I can tell. Damn." That had the markings of a bigger job. Bobby leaned his head back as he tried to decide where he'd even start with that. As soon as possible, that much was for sure. Couldn't let the little tyke get damp because there was a leak in the roof. "I reckon you and your brother ain't ever done any roofin', have ya?"
He looked over at Michael, lips quirking a little. "You kinda look as if you ain't ever touched a tool in your life. No offense."
"Oh, I'm not offended. Until a month ago, I hadn't and honestly, I only touched them to hand them to Lucifer." For him, holding tools was what hot guys did so he could watch them and appreciate how butch they were. He didn't really care otherwise. "I'm not really a handy sort, nor am I interested in being one. I'd rather sit back and appreciate handy men working hard for me."
Michael watched Bobby inspect the ceiling again and let out a low whistle. "Sorry, can't help myself." He leaned back against the wall and kicked Raphael's toy rabbit aside. "I just felt I would illustrate what I can bring to the table in a repair sesh."
"Huh. Well, if you do that while bringin' a beer every now and then, I ain't seein' myself complainin'." Wasn't that different from the time he'd fixed up his neighbour's fence a couple months back. Only she'd brought out homemade lemonade, which was admittedly a nice touch.
He put a hand into his back-pocket and pulled out a small notebook with a pen attached to it. "Lead me through the house, yeah? I'll make note of the worst of the damage and then I can come back with the truck and some material and my tools. I ain't gonna make due with whatever you two city boys got."
They had to be from a city, right? London or somewhere, going by the accent.
"City boys? Ha. I bloody wish. I haven't been in a sodding city since Manchester. And I was 14 when we did that, before Raphael was alive and kicking." He supposed they were in a few cities as they drove through but they hadn't had a proper home in a while. They were less city boys and more commune livers who were trying hard to be something other than uneducated idiots. "We drove up from Utah and not the urban part of it, I mean way out in the sticks."
He lead Bobby out of the bedroom and then paused in the hall, gesturing down at the floor. "These are a bit fucked and the roof is leaky here too." He let Bobby write notes before he laughed to himself. "I'm definitely not a country boy, just to clarify. More of a roamer. A little out of sorts, we are. We didn't expect to leave home so suddenly, of course."
"You don't gotta tell me," Bobby clarified, "I ain't pryin'." Although this was definitely making him curious. They both came across as if they had been around a lot, Lucifer and Michael. Might just be because of how out in the sticks this place was. "Sorry you had to leave home like that though. That must be rough."
When he had left home for the first time to join the army, it had felt like freedom. But Bobby figured the circumstances were different here.
"I wouldn't say it was rough. I had a good time. Would have been even better without a young child and Lucifer blaring music but otherwise, it was a good decision." If he had gone alone, it would have been much less bothersome but he supposed if he was going, he had to bring Luci. And Luci was the one who wanted to keep the band together. "You know that absolutely beautiful feeling you get when you just -- when everything lifts. And it's like you're free. And it's going to tumble back down onto your shoulders, sure, but you had some time to finally stretch and prepare."
Michael knew he had a lot of solve and a lot to handle, that one day he'd have to talk to his father. But for now? No, he just wanted to be free. He wanted to make money, fuck around and live how he wanted. "Besides, it was obviously a good decision to leave. Look who I happened to run into?"
Michael winked at Bobby and then proceeded down the stairs like nothing happened. "Our living room has a hole in it, by the by."
"Yeah, I know the feeling." He remembered it at several turns of his life. Never lasted long, but that first freeing breath when a burden fell away. Bobby wondered what it was for Michael that made him feel he had to escape to freedom so badly. However, he knew better than to ask.
"Who did you run into?" That he did ask, frowning as he followed him down the stairs. A hole in the living room? All right, there were several issues to solve here. Maybe he'd have to bring Sammy here for a couple hours today.
Woah. He was so cute. "Just a really handsome guy who offered to fix stuff in my house." Bobby was cute. Cute but slow. Then again, he probably didn't expect to be hit on by the weird out-of-town queer. He knew he should watch the flirting, especially when trapped in a house with the guy, but Bobby gave of a different sort of energy,
He would be surprised if anything happened.
"So the house is all yours. Honestly, we're not precious about any of it. If you think you can make it more liveable, I'll take it." Lucifer was going to be very happy when he came home. "I'll make sure I have coffee on the go while you're here too."
"Huh." All right, so that marked the first time he'd gotten hit on by a guy. Bobby righted his head and looked at Michael, trying to gauge how he felt about that and decide how he should react to that. "All right. I ain't gonna pretend like that's not the best offer I've gotten all year."
He wasn't exactly complaining about a steady coffee flow. How did he react to the compliment though? "You're handsome too. By the by." Maybe like that? "Thanks, man."
Oh. There was actually potential here. Fascinating. His eyes almost lit up as he looked at Bobby, wondering if he was just awkwardly trying to pass on a compliment or if it was what he was suspecting. Still a better reaction than a fist in the face. "No worries." Heh. "Man."
He eyed him up and down and then walked back into the center of the living room, turning back to look at Bobby. "So, handsome, when are you free? I'm usually here until 8ish and then I head out for the night but I'll be here any time until then. And I can make some exceptions for you." He didn't mind missing a night of cruising if it meant he could check out this fine piece of man instead.
"Well, Sammy's bedtime is at eight and Matty's at nine, so I gotta be home by then." No, he didn't really have a nightlife. At all. Usually he just read alone in the living room and drank a beer or two. It wasn't exactly the life of the party in Bobby's life. "But today, I'll be up on your roof between noon and three, I reckon. That's when I gotta pick up my kiddo."
John's kiddo. Whatever. He had claimed ownership by now, somehow.
"I think my Luci will dump Raphael on me shortly so perhaps our boys can play." Whatever it took to keep Raphael quiet and out of his way. He liked him, he did, but he also liked spending his time scrolling through grindr and trying to work out the stock markets without the sounds of Muppet Babies in the distance. "It would be good for the kid, to make friends and the like, he hasn't been enrolled anywhere yet."
None of them had except for Gabriel - who only got enrolled because he asked Michael to sign stuff for him. Lucifer was determined to slack and Raphael was slipping through the cracks a little. "Gives us time to play too."
"Sammy's good with other kids. Bit of a doormat sometimes, but in a cute way, yanno?" He was fond of the boy, couldn't really help that. Both of them were his boys and he found it pretty interesting to watch their personalities form as they grew up. "Look, I'm gonna take off and come back with what I need for your roof. Don't want you getting wet, might make that make-up run."
He was trying to tease, hoping that wouldn't be taken the wrong way. "Would be a shame, eh?"
"Oh, I think it would be a crying shame. Especially after all the efforts I've gone to keep it. Not really a small town aesthetic, is it?" Michael knew, of course he did, he got looks and bold, out there questions but he found it funny more than anything. The further he was from God, the happier he could be.
He walked Bobby up to his door and opened it up for him, leaning in the doorway. "You're my hero as of late, Mr Bobby Singer. I'll have to think of a way to repay you."
"I'm sure you'll think of something. Talkin' like that, you gotta be a smart one." Probably a bit too smart for his own good. And he definitely knew what he was doing, which was almost a provocation in and on itself. Bobby definitely did not know what he was doing and he barely even had any time to analyse how he was feeling.
Still, he didn't like feeling like he was on a loss, so he headed for the door and turned his head to look at Michael as he walked out. "I like sweet stuff."
